"I feel
that you really are taking a huge chance if you go into your birth and
you are counting on a complete stranger to be your support. I now feel that having a doula
attend our second birth was one of our most responsible decisions.
"My
first birth experience was a bit overwhelming for me, as I am sure it
is for many first time fathers. We attended the Birthing Classes at the
Victoria Hospital and I thought I was ready for anything. Boy was I
wrong. From the minute the contractions started I was frozen like a deer
in the headlights of a car. The nurses just went about their business,
while quickly answering any basic questions I had without giving any
thought to my uneasiness about the birth I was about to experience.

my first birth experience I fully supported my wife’s request for a
doula to be present at the second. We contacted Julia and were impressed
from the minute we met her. She made me feel at ease right from the
beginning. Any questions or concerns we had she either had the answer or
researched it to provide all the pros and cons to us.

met us at the hospital and was prepared to help us in any way possible.
She was full of pain reducing ideas and helped us implement them. My
wife Tammy was also using Hypnobirthing techniques to ensure a relaxed
and intervention-free birth. While we combined all our ideas, Tammy was
able to achieve the birth she had planned and hoped for. It was very
comforting knowing that we had someone we could count on to keep us on
our game plan. With Julia’s presence I was able to remain calm and
focused on my role because I knew that I had someone to fall back on if
I needed.

"Tami was incredibly wonderful. I am incredibly thankful I had her
support and encouragement. I really wanted a drug-free birth, and with
Tami's help I worked through my labour pains and challenges and achieved a
drug-free birth. Every labouring woman should have a doula.
"I respect, and greatly appreciate that Tami did not impress
upon my husband and I her beliefs regarding what is right or wrong or best for
labour. She listened to us and took our lead. She gave us points of
view in what seemed a fair and non-judgmental way. Early in pregnancy, my
husband and I were wondering if we really needed a doula since we were having a
midwife. Now, we cannot imagine anyone not having a doula.
Her support allowed for a more positive and beautiful birth. We
cannot be more thankful. "Our midwives are very impressed
with Tami and how she participated in the labour. She was a vital support
without overstepping the boundaries of anyone involved. I have heard that
this can occur, but Birth Roots Doula Collective Inc. was reported not to have this
reputation. How true!! What a wonderful collective you have. I

say a big thank you for the wonderful classes. They prepared my husband and I
for any possible outcome that could have arisen during our labor and delivery
experience. Your doula/instructor Tami took us through so many scenarios that it
would have been hard to fit any more information into our brains!!! Thanks to
Tami's guidance in the class, her clever activities and open discussions I was
able to achieve the drug-free hospital birth that I had wanted. And my husband
was able to see the medical snowballing that could occur when drugs are used,
things I was afraid of but he couldn't/didn't understand. Our daughter,
Terri Grace, was born naturally at St. Boniface Hospital on November 3rd, 2006
(my estimated due date of all days!) at 9:39 PM. My husband was an excellent
labor/birth coach, and I feel that Tami helped solidify my belief in myself to

Attached is a pic of our daughter, Lola Mae Moore
Hildebrand, who was helped into the world by our wonderful doula, Tara Laba.
Tara's assistance, strength, and encouragement were invaluable. She was with us
for the highs, like those final pushes, and the lows, like the tedious time
spent waiting to dilate. Lola would say thanks if she could. When she's older,
she'll read all about Tara's help in my pregnancy journal. Maybe Tara will be
around to deliver Lola's first baby! (Can you imagine, Tara? Oy.)

Being our first pregnancy we were at times overwhelmed, not sure of what was
happening and what was going to happen. You were an incredible source of
knowledge and inspiration to me/us. Your calm and re-assuring voice and
manner helped to ease my apprehensions and fears. You truly helped me
believe that this is a wonderful experience and you helped me to re-affirm
my beliefs and wishes. You remained focused and helped us to achieve our

someone else to rely on other than the hospital staff and my Dr. You didn't
hesitate when we phoned and said labor was started we could tell by your
voice that you were genuinely happy and excited that this was starting! I
