I started bellydancing in 1999 when I took a class with friends. I
became immediately fascinated and practiced every day. The more I
learned the more I wanted to learn and often found myself dancing 4
hours a day. I am now in my third year of teaching and I have taught
classes and workshops in high schools, universities, community clubs,
and health care centers to women whose ages ranged from 7 to 75.
I
have attended as many workshops as possible with modern goddesses such
as Yazmina Ramzy, Sharon Moore (American tribal), Sharazade, Nath Keo,
Sarita (I later traveled to Vancouver for 3 weeks to study with her
more), Jalillah, Roula Siad, and Hadia. I have also completed Hadia's
level 1 teacher training certification in June of 2007.
My performance resume includes solo stage performances at the Pantages
Playhouse, traveling throughout Canada to perform at endless
parties, weddings, kids parties, fashion shows, blessing ways, and
stagettes. I was also a feature dancer in Winnipeg's Tonite in Cairo
3 years in a row.
I was also interviewed on T.V. by CBC national news at The
University of Manitoba regarding my classes there, the safety of the
movements, and the many benefits associated with this art form. At a
later date for the opening of 'The Edge Artists Village and Gallery'
my performance was filmed again by CBC News and was aired
nationally.
The more awareness I receive about this artform the more I crave it.
Since I've started bellydance I have come to understand the
connection between the mind, body, and spirit. I feel centered! I've
become more health conscious, and have been motivated to exercise
regularly (outside of dance) in order to improve my dance. This
dance has endless benefits and I take great pleasure in having the
opportunity to share it with others.
