Baby Signing Classes
Birth Roots Doula Collective Inc.
is now offering a Mitey Signs Workshop series
This workshop is open to anyone
who is pregnant or has a pre-walking baby. You can start
signing with your baby as soon as you know signs. Research
shows that babies consistently shown signs at 6 -7 months of
age will produce their first signs at 8 - 10 months.
This workshop focuses on
early communication, language development,
and having fun. During the workshop you
will learn the benefits of using ASL with your baby, how to
introduce signing throughout your day, and many signs
covering the topics of: assistance and suppport, family,
emotions, food, clothes, toys, transportation,
animals, numbers and colours. It is entirely up to you to
decide how many of these signs you would like to use with
your family. You and your baby will enjoy the
benefits of signing whether you use 10 or 200
signs. We will learn fun rhymes using ASL
that help with language development and are
enjoyable for babies of all ages. As well we will sing
songs, sign books and play games using the signs
and concepts taught. This workshop is open to the whole
family and parents are encouraged to bring their babies with
them
Facilitator's Biography:
Glenda Pratt is a
professional ASL-English interpreter. She
graduated from Red River College in 2000 and I has been
studying ASL since 1995. She is a Certified
Sign2Me presenter and has completed the
training for the Parent Child Mother Goose
program and FUNdamentals from Bookmates,
2006.
She taught both her daughters,
Lauren (born April, 2003) and Haley (born July, 2005) to
sign. Lauren reproduced her first sign at 10 months of age
and continues to sign today to her baby sister and to make
herself better understood and for fun. Her first three signs
were BABY, BLANKET and MILK. Haley signed her first sign at
11 months but started to consistently use signs for
communication at 12 months. Although Haley does not have
many spoken words at this time she is able to positively
interact with her family and share all of the her
experiences.
Glenda says that "Signing with
my family has been one of the most rewarding aspects of
being a mother. I love watching them grow and learn and
signing has given me an opportunity to see into their minds
and thoughts that I otherwise would not have had."
